About Therapy

About Img 2Partake in a journey leading to transformation.

Hello, my name is Shawna Starkman, and I want to welcome you to a transformative journey toward deeper, authentic self-connection and fulfilling relationships. As a psychotherapist serving the vibrant communities of New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut, I bring a unique understanding of the pressures of living the high-pressure expectations of the tristate area.

My approach is rooted in the belief that addressing intimacy and sexual issues requires a holistic and integrative perspective, encompassing the entire system of mind, body, and spirit. By delving into the complexities of your experiences, I strive to offer comprehensive solutions that resonate on multiple levels.

You may seek help with your intimate life, but you don’t live in a vacuum. Every aspect of your life is a variable part of the equation, leading to health, satisfaction, and joy. I know what it feels like when the formula is not adding up.

My philosophy centers around dismantling the societal messages we’ve internalized about sex, intimacy, masculinity, femininity, beauty, perfection, and success. I firmly believe in the power of strength-based modalities and individual empowerment to navigate these intricate aspects of our lives.

FlowerI tailor my approach to meet your specific needs.

Drawing from a tapestry of therapeutic methods, including Internal Family Systems, Gottman Techniques, and Relational Life Therapy, I craft a personalized approach for each client or couple. This eclectic blend allows me to tailor my guidance to your unique needs, fostering a journey of self-discovery and transformation.

In our collaborative sessions, you can expect a safe, nonjudgmental space where your concerns are seen and heard. My commitment to your well-being goes beyond traditional therapy, drawing on my diverse background to offer insights and support tailored to your unique needs.

I know this can be daunting, but I encourage you to bravely embark on a journey toward rediscovering the inherent right to pleasure that every individual deserves.

I am here to provide a guiding light to walk the path of health and healing beside you. I am here to remind you that pleasure is not just a frivolous luxury or an afterthought when everything else is taken care of but a fundamental aspect of being a complete and fulfilled human.

About Me

Observations of relationships inspired me to become a therapist.

Before my career in therapy, I spent the first half of my professional life immersed in the set and interior design worlds. This unconventional path granted me access to countless homes, providing invaluable insights into intricate relationships as they played out in real time.

Witnessing the inner workings of diverse couples and family systems fueled my passion for understanding and enhancing interpersonal connections.

There came a pivotal moment when the well-being of couples and families took precedence over choosing the perfect fabric or rug. Driven by this more profound calling, I wholeheartedly followed my passion, embarking on a journey of education and personal growth.

I earned a Master of Science in Couples and Family Therapy from Thomas Jefferson University, specializing in sex and intimacy therapy.

On the personal front, I wear many hats.

I am a proud life partner, enthusiastic volleyball mama, and the caring fur parent to a killer Schnoodle named Bodhi.

When I’m not at work, you’ll catch me soaking up as much knowledge as possible – diving into books, tuning into podcasts, and attending various self-care retreats.

I’m a total wanderer, always seeking nature’s magic, beauty, and healing. I enjoy traveling for curiosity and inspiration, which always fuels my creativity to keep me living in the light.
